Shawntai Brown is a Detroit poet, playwright, and artistic coordinator holding a Bachelor of Art in English with a creative writing emphasis from Western Michigan University. Her narrative works have focused on faith, race, sexuality and food. She authored and co-director of eLLe Kalamazoo play project series, lead editor/organizer of the Voices theater project through Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative. Currently she serves as a writer-in-residence through InsideOut Literary Arts Project in Detroit, teaching poetry, essay and playwriting to high school students. She spends her evenings dreaming up homemade board games and vegetarian meals, bending broken jewelry into second life, and discouraging her rabbit from eating her sofa.
Matrix Theatre Writers' Circle “Do You See It Coming?” was created in a collaborative writing process with the Matrix Theatre Company in Southwest Detroit. More than 20 individuals between the ages of 18-75 met weekly to discuss the problems facing Southeastern Michigan and collectively found ways to address those topics through playwriting. Since 1991, Matrix Theatre Company has mounted a series of groundbreaking productions based on and around important community issues. With the creation of more than 120 new scripts, the organization is leading the charge of finding ways to turn community voices into powerful productions. Check out this video by the Writers' Circle as they discuss their thoughts and feelings about what it's like to be a Detroiter today.
